Inside cells are tiny organelles called mitochondria, which are responsible for producing cellular fuel known as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Sometimes, for a multitude of reasons (aging, illness, lifestyle, etc.) the mitochondria may not be able to produce enough ATP.  When that happens, cells struggle to survive, rather than being able to function optimally or effectively repair or regenerate themselves. This mitochondrial dysfunction, as it is known, can snowball, as depleted cells in one bodily system cause a ripple effect in other systems. Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered to be at the heart of most major diseases and disorders.

Mitochondria produce a molecule known as adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which contains energy within its chemical bonds. Often referred to as the energy currency of mitochondria. One of the major functions of ATP in cells is to shuttles its bonded energy to places within the cell where and when that energy is needed for various activities.

When those chemical bonds are broken, outcomes the energy. Special enzymes in ATP transfer that energy, giving the cell what amounts to a straight shot of fuel. It’s important to note that ATP itself can’t be stored, only produced by mitochondria for immediate use and then recycled.

Red light therapy triggers a reaction that helps reverse this downward spiral. Light-sensitive molecules are especially responsive to red and NIR light photons. This interaction excites the mitochondria and stimulates ATP production.

Energized cells perform better, repair themselves more efficiently, and replace themselves faster. As old, damaged cells are replaced, healthy new cells emerge. This is one of the reasons that red light treatments are so popular for improving skin complexion and speeding up wound healing and now with NIR (Near Infra Red) technology the red lights penetrate into fat cells and cause a reduction of fatty tissue and release it through your lymphatic system.

Two Types of Fat Explained

Subcutaneous Fat

Subcutaneous fat refers to the ‘soft fat’ located under the skin outside the abdominal cavity. This adipose tissue can be found on the upper arms, buttocks, and thighs.

Near-infrared wavelengths are projected through the skin to target subcutaneous fat anywhere on the body.

Visceral Fat

Visceral fat is the ‘hard fat’ that surrounds the organs in the abdominal cavity. It is linked to heart disease, cancer, dementia, and diabetes. It’s much more difficult to lose visceral fat.

This is sometimes called a ‘lifestyle fat,’ and results from a poor diet and being sedentary.

A healthy diet and exercise are still the best ways to lose visceral fat.

The reduction of female hormones during menopause leads to the redistribution of body fat as well. Unfortunately, a lot of fat ends up being stored in the abdominal area after menopause.
